Description:Sophomore English is
divided into two parts: Speech (first semester) and Literature (second
semester). The speech semester requires students to present the
following speeches: Demonstrative, Informative, and Persuasive, as well
as several smaller impromptu and planned speeches. Writing accompanies
each of the speech types. Students will also study poetry during the
first semester. The literature semester includes the study of several
short stories, Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, and John Steinbeck’s The
Pearl. Writing assignments are interwoven into both semesters. Grammar
is studied during both semesters through DOL (Daily Oral Language). A
30-lesson vocabulary series is used to expand students’ vocabulary. The
series incorporates the study of analogies, which requires the students
to review words from previous lessons.
